Artists Profile: Alvin Kofi

Alvin Kofi born in London of African and West Indian heritage has been a practicing artist for over twenty years. After studying Design he spent several years working in advertising before returning to his first love, drawing.

On his return from Africa and to the art world in 1998, he quickly established a reputation, having produced the first Black print collection distributed in the UK. The subjects and themes of his work have varied over the years but the tradition of Africa has been constant throughout.

He is responsible for starting in 2003 the arts collective - ‘Black Arts Focus’, where he brought together eighteen Black artists to explore their work and experiences. He has since organised and participated in numerous collaborations with other artists exhibiting both in the UK and internationally.

Having studied and embraced African cosmology and spirituality his style is accessible and contemporary whilst representative of traditional African cultural expression. His knowledge of African art and culture permeates and vibrates across his work.

‘Lost BUT NOT FORGOTTEN’, his latest collection represents studies in life. It shows and reminds us that our ancient past is ever present in our expressions of ourselves.
